Tarishe is a modest village surrounded by fortress walls meant to keep out one thing: werewolves. In truth, the wolves are scarcely bothersome and seldom seen excepting one night a year when a blood-red moon appears. This full Tarishe moon never fails to herald the arrival of an entire pack of hairy beasts, drawn to the village like greedy dragons to golden treasure.

Based on Vallatrece’s speech, it seemed like her foe had been effortlessly subdued. Wanting to witness the truth with my own eyes, I inched silently towards the bedroom door. Was it even possible that this confrontation could end as quickly as it started? I doubted we would see a complete end without a spot of wicked fun to entertain the crow-feathered sorceress. She was a calculating feline enjoying the torturing of a hapless mouse prior to crushing it. For a second, I wondered about the black cats Kresh had seen in the orb. Where were they? Or had their images been an illusion?

The crone continued with her timorous act. “Allow your elder to live, and I will forgive your trespass here today.” Vallatrece laughed aloud with unfitting glee, and I peeked through the gap in the doorway to watch. The beguiler was on the floor, hunched over bended knees. Her cane had somehow ended up across the room, flat on a doormat. The tormentor with her lengths of shiny, raven hair continued to laugh a wicked trill of amusement as she circled her falsely-wilted foe. I glanced about for Thaddeus, but he was nowhere in sight. “I’ll tell you what’s going to happen,” Vallatrece announced with an abrupt halt to her laughter. “I am going to undo the curse you created to torment the unfortunate. Then, my eager little army is going to destroy your village and all the unlucky souls who followed you here. It will be as if Tarishe never existed.” The old woman turned her head sideways to look up at her younger rival. “Why would you be so cruel?” she asked in a voice deceptively frail. “Cruel?” Vallatrece repeated as if stunned by the word. “Cruel is a curse cast on the weak and ignorant. A curse that tortures helpless puppets for over a decade.” Kresh growled over my shoulder. “She better not be referring to us.” I realized he was watching the scene play out over my head. “Shhh,” I warned him. The consequences if we were caught would be worse than unkind. “I have heard it said,” Vallatrece went on, “that those who dish out cruelty must prepare to eventually eat it. Today, old woman, is your eventually.” The Tarishe witch chose that moment to straighten up her torso, more erect than it seemed the curvature of her spine would allow. There was a glint in her eyes that made my breath hitch. The look was paired with a defiant leer that preceded an assertively spoken retort. “I think, young fool, that today is your eventually.”
